Professional baseball used to be a gritty gamey that was played hard by everyone that was in the league. Commissioners and umpires started to crack down on the policing of the game by the players, which usually turned into a player creation hit by a pitch. The worst part, in my opinion, about the players not being allowed to police the game is that players can advantageously disrespect the game now, and many of them do. The way baseball is supposed to be played is like it was back in the days when Bob Gibson was in the major leagues.
